Valentine’s Day Special: Movies for the Heart and America’s Most Romantic Wine Bars

There is certainly no shortage of romantic movies to keep you occupied this Valentine’s Day weekend. Whether single or in a relationship, these movies will not only make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but also leaves you with a fun story full of heart and humor. These may not be the most conventional romantic movies, but they will entertain you just the same.

Pretty Woman
Cast: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Hector Elizondo, Jason Alexander

Julia Roberts may be an Oscar winner, but the role she is most well-known for is a prostitute who wins the heart of a wealthy businessman in Pretty Woman. Hired to be his companion while in town on business, Vivian not only teaches Edward about love, but what it means to truly care for someone else. An unconventional love story, it’s one of the few films that still holds up 25 years later.

Flipped
Cast: Madeline Carroll, Callan McAuliffe, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, Aiden Quinn

Directed by Rob Reiner, Flipped is not a film known by many, but tells a beautifully, heartwarming story of young love. There are many defining moments in every relationship, but it’s interesting to see how two people can recall an event so differently. One person can find a gesture romantic, while another can see it as an annoying inconvenience. That’s the basic concept behind this film. Each event is shown from one perspective and then flipped to be shown from the other point of view.

Crazy, Stupid, Love
Cast: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore

The first time we saw Steve Carell getting lessons on how to pick up women he was a 40-year old virgin with no game. This time around he’s a 40-year old, recently separated man with, well, no game. But, unlike The 40-Year Old Virgin, Carell has a better teacher this time around. The smooth-talking Jacob (Ryan Gosling) takes Cal (Carell) under his wings and teaches him how to dress and the art of picking up women. It’s a refreshing break from the standard formulaic rom-coms we’re used to seeing. As Cal would say, it's the perfect combination of sexy and cute.

The Notebook
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Marsden, Gena Rowlands, James Garner

Clichéd as it may be, The Notebook has all the makings for a true romantic movie…young love, misunderstandings, and the fortitude to love again. When Allie (McAdams), a young woman of privilege, falls in love with Noah (Ryan Gosling), a young man from the wrong side of the tracks, their relationship isn’t exactly smooth sailing. But, even so, their tale of love and love lost is one for the storybooks. Separated by wealth and family, they find a way back to each other, no matter the sacrifices involved.

The Princess Bride
Cast: Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Wallace Shawn, Fred Savage, Peter Falk

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” This may not be the most recognized line from The Princess Bride, but it’s the one that holds truest to what the movie represents. A corrupt king, kidnappers and even death are no match for the love between Wesley and Princess Buttercup.

America’s Most Romantic Wine Bars
Couples nationwide are making big plans to go out this Valentine’s Day weekend. And whether you are in a relationship or not, it’s fair to say you will be indulging in drinks - many of which are likely wine.

And if you happen to be on a weekend getaway in some of America’s biggest cities - whether it be with your significant other or your best girlfriends - be sure to check out our pick of this country’s most romantic wine bars.

Orlando - Orlando is the world’s most highly sought tourist destination. Yes, Mickey Mouse has its perks… but another gem is Winter Park - an area of the city lined with high-end clothing stores and arguably the city’s best dining options. And that’s where patrons can find The Wine Bar which is really all about, well, wine. In fact, Wine Spectator honored The Wine Room with its “Best of Award of Excellence” for the past three years. And it’s no surprise as to why. With wine machines located in nearly every place imaginable -- offering more than 150 different types of wine -- think of this bar as a classy all-you-can-eat buffet of wine. And if you are in Orlando for longer than a weekend, swing by during the week for wine tastings, cheese pairings, and much more.

New York City - More of a lounge than a wine bar, we would be remiss to not include by far one of the most romantic bars in the world -- that also happens to offer an impressive wine selection. While the food and drinks are top-notch, Shalel is more of an experience than anything else. This hidden gem blends in among the brownstone apartment buildings that line up the streets of the Upper West Side -- the only real difference is that its staircase is adorned with rose petals. And that’s just the beginning. If you’re looking to make the night extra special, show up a little earlier and take a seat in the private room complete with its own mini waterfall. No joke.

Chicago - Yes, this is a list of the most romantic wine bars this country has to offer. And while Bin 36 may not boast the most intimate environment and is instead brightly lit in a wide open space, it is located directly alongside the Chicago River surrounded by some of the Windy City’s most impressive architectural skyscrapers. Not only that, but you will be hard pressed to find another wine bar that not only serves wine flights but cheese flights that are perfectly paired with your drinks of choice. And, although it may not have the ambiance of some of the other bars on this list, it does have a killer Valentine’s Day menu, which includes the aphrodisiacs oysters and chocolate, complete with live jazz music that makes this the most romantic hotspot in the Midwest.

San Francisco - No one in America knows wine better than San Fran. Of course hitting up Napa Valley vineyards is a must, but don’t forget to check out Hotel Biron for its candlelit setting, sizable fireplace, rotating artwork and curated wine selection when looking for a quiet evening to kick back with friends or a loved one.

Los Angeles - This popular tapas joint has it all - open air patio dining, a romantic lounge atmosphere, and a cabana for larger parties. Vinoteque offers wine flights with a Valentine’s Day menu that includes prosciutto and burrata, sage gnocchi gratin, pork loin parmigiana, and bananas foster parfait. To top it off, this lovely wine bar also makes a valiant effort to replicate the romantic vibe of Rome with its adorable Love Locks initiative.
