Super Bowl, Super Advertising

Super Bowl 50 is this Sunday, and it is expected that more Americans will be tuning into the big game than ever before. It’s entirely possible that the game itself could be the one and only reason for so many to want to watch, but it’s more likely that there are a number of variables playing a factor -- namely, the commercials.

Super Bowl is advertising’s biggest night, with marketers dishing out a whopping $5 million for a standard 30 second spot. And thanks to the rise of social media, it has become a larger than life spectacle for the days and weeks leading into the highly anticipated night. Some advertisers prefer to keep their commercials close to the chest until they air on TV, but many have opted to release teasers -- and oftentimes the entire spot -- on YouTube in advance of Sunday night.

What may prove though to be most shocking about this Super Bowl is what we won’t see. No Nissan. No Mercedes-Benz. No Nationwide (I guess not so shocking given its critically panned 2015 Super Bowl commercial). And no GoDaddy!

That said, there are in fact a number of classic advertisers like Budweiser and TurboTax expected to make an appearance as well as a few newbies such as Amazon and Colgate joining the lineup. Other Super Bowl advertisers include Apartments.com, Bai, Avocados From Mexico, Honda, Butterfinger, Kia, Pepsi, Squarespace, Taco Bell, Wix, Axe, Shocktop, Skittles, Mountain Dew, PayPal, Snickers, and Toyota.

Here are a few standouts --
  • Budweiser is known for clydesdales, puppies and even frogs, but now… Helen Mirren? In a bold and respectable move, the big brand advertiser is dedicating time to remind viewers to #GiveADamn and stop drunk driving.

  • This is the 10th and final year of Doritos’ “Crash the Super Bowl” -- the contest giving Americans nationwide the chance to tap into their film-making aspirations and submit their own user-generated content. The program is going out with a bang though, with the contest winner being honored with the opportunity to work with Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder.

  • Kraft Heinz’s spot as part of its #MeetTheKetchups campaign is complete with the “cuteness factor” of weiner dogs - as Super Bowl loves its animals :)

We are looking forward to seeing everything unfold this Sunday so be sure to check out our live tweeting throughout the game at @Hungry_Watching with the hashtag #SB50.

And with so many food brands top of mind, here are a few snack and dishes to whip up for game time inspired by some of Super Bowl’s biggest advertisers --
