Zootopia Movie Review and John & Joe's PIzzeria

Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, J.K. Simmons

In 250 Characters or Less:
Judy is Zootopia’s first bunny cop, who no one thinks has what it takes to do the job. With the help of a sly fox, Judy goes on the hunt to find the mammals that have gone missing, but discovers more than she bargained for.

What Works:
Every since she was a little bunny, Judy dreamed of moving to Zootopia and becoming a police officer. And, although everyone told her she couldn't do it, she never let her size or others’ perceptions of her stop her from living her dream.  Unfortunately, her first assignment out is meter maid. But, her optimism is unwavering and she vows to be the best meter maid there is! Determined to prove her worth, Judy gets herself assigned to one of the missing mammal cases, but only has 48 hours to solve the case, or else she has to quit the force.

Zootopia is a refreshing take on the Disney heroine, as we have a female character whose life goals isn’t to find her prince or fall in love, but to have a career. Judy refuses to take ‘No’ for an answer and becomes Zootopia's first rabbit officer. It’s a great story for kids, telling them to dream big and not let other people’s perceptions of you keep you from going after what you want. It also teaches you not to let your perceptions cause you to judge others. In addition to a beautifully imaginative story, the animals are incredibly cute and full of life, especially the sloths at the DMV.

Be Aware:
There’s not much to dislike in the film. The main character is a nice and refreshing change of pace, but while the theme may be more evolved for a children’s movie, some of the scenes were as well. I was a little surprised to see a drug lab in the film, as short as the scene was. The full yellow jumpsuit and mask had a very strong Breaking Bad vibe to it…luckily kids won’t make the connection.

Zootopia is certainly entertaining and fun for the whole family, but may not make the type of lasting impression we’re used to seeing from Disney. The movie depends heavily on the ‘cuteness’ factor and one-off jokes.

Overall Grade: B+

John & Joe’s Pizzeria

In 250 Characters or Less:
After seeing Zootopia, why not check out the elephants, gorillas and more at the Bronx Zoo? And when the kids are hungry, stop by John & Joe’s Pizzeria -- a local pizza joint in Pelham Gardens nearby the zoo.

What Works:
With all the running around at the zoo, the family is bound to be hungry -- and nothing satisfies the kids more than pizza. Yes, the zoo has food -- but let’s face it… it’s nothing to write home about. What is more than worthy of consideration though is John & Joe’s Pizzeria, a local pizza joint in Pelham Gardens nearby the Bronx Zoo.

This is far superior to the typical neighborhood pizzeria. Within the proximity of the Bronx’s Little Italy on Arthur Avenue, John & Joe’s Pizzeria boats authentic fare of flavorful freshly made pizza, calzones, pizza rolls, and much more. And talk about affordable… This place is a steal, serving up 10 garlic knots for only $1!

Be Aware:
This is a super casual restaurant so don’t expect to have a long sit down meal. This place only works for a quick slice of pizza and a fountain soda drink.
