Journalist Kim Baker uproots her life to become a war correspondent in Afghanistan. But, as the war in Iraq becomes more prominent, Kim finds herself risking her life to get a story interesting enough to keep people interested back home.
What Works:
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the military equivalent of the well-known acronym WTF and ‘what the f*ck’ is right. Though the war in Iraq was escalating during this time it didn’t mean the trouble in Afghanistan and Pakistan had all of a sudden gone away. Resources were being taken away from correspondents for the ‘more interesting’ war, leaving journalists risking their lives and the lives of those around them just to find a story juicy enough to get them some airtime.
As expected Tina Fey’s charm and self-deprecating humor makes you instantly fall in love with her character, Kim. She’s funny and quick-lipped, yet serious and forbidding when she needs to be. Her onscreen chemistry with fellow cast mates --including Margot Robbie, Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman -- is both entertaining and effortless, while still portraying the complexities of their relationships.
Be Aware:
Though headlined by funny-woman Tina Fey, the film isn’t all laughs. The aspects of war are serious, as is the severity of the underlying theme of the film. However, as told from Kim’s perspective, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot tries to stay as light-hearted as possible, whether it’s dealing with the Afghan people or her fellow journalists. The film drags a bit about three quarters of the way in as we watch Kim struggle to find her place, but picks up again at the end...although the crowning moment seemed to get resolved a little too neatly considering the situation.
Overall Grade: B
