Fun Night In: Streaming Shows Worth Checking Out on Hulu + Creamy Mac & Cheese

Shows Worth Checking Out on Hulu
By Jaya Daniel

Looking for a Reality Show Fix?
Are you a fan of The Real Housewives franchise? You may want to check out The Hotwives starring Casey Wilson, Danielle Schneider, Kristen Schaal and Tymberlee Hill. A parody of Bravo’s Housewives franchise, the show is full of ridiculous antics and laugh out loud situations. These housewives are the definition of hot mess.

Take a Break for Dramatic Effect
Based on the Stephen King novel, 11.22.63 stars James Franco as Jake Epping, a teacher who travels back in time to October 21, 1960 to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But love, the past’s unwillingness to change and Lee Harvey Oswald all stand in the way of his mission.

Need Comic Relief?
If supernatural comedies are your thing then Deadbeat starring Tyler Labine may be right up your alley. A medium, Kevin (Labine) works with ghosts to help resolve their unfinished business so that they can cross over to the other side. Unfortunately, things don’t always run smoothly as he deals with a fake medium, played by Cat Deeley, who tries to undermine him at every turn…it also doesn’t help that he’s always high.

Difficult People, starring Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner, follows Julie and Billy as they navigate work and single life in New York. Struggling comics and unlucky in love, they watch all their friends move forward as they bitterly watch from the sidelines.

Saved from cancellation, The Mindy Project starring Mindy Kaling is a smart, light-hearted comedy that started off following Mindy, a materialistic OBGYN, as she dealt with finding love while maintaining a successful career, but evolved into a show about career, relationships and motherhood.

A Golden Globe nominee for Best Television Series, Casual starring Michaela Watkins and Tommy Dewey is a half hour comedy about siblings -- one a bachelor and the other a newly divorced single mom -- as they help each other wade through the dating pool.

Creamy Mac + Cheese
by Soraya Hanzus

And in the spirit of Casual, nothing brings families together like some good ol’ comfort food. And nothing represents comfort food more than creamy macaroni and cheese.

Try out the following recipe for this classic favorite which yields six servings:

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups of elbow pasta
  • ⅓ cup of grated muenster cheese, plus 4 deli-thin slices of muenster cheese
  • ½ cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup of grated parmesan cheese
  • 12-oz can of evaporated 2% milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ head of cauliflower cut into florets
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:
  • Whisk the egg, evaporated milk, cayenne, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper in a bowl. Toss the grated cheeses in a separate bowl.
  • Boil a large pot of salted water. Add the cauliflower florets and cook until almost falling apart and then transfer to a bowl. Add the elbow pasta to the boiling water and cook until al dente. Drain the water, saving ¼ cup of cooking water. Preheat the broiler.
  • Combine the egg mixture and the grated cheeses in the empty pot. Cook over medium-low heat, continuously stirring, until the cheeses melt and the sauce thickens. Remove from the heat and add the cauliflower. Puree with an immersion blender until smooth and light. Stir in some of the reserved pasta water until creamy.
  • Toss the pasta in the sauce. Season with salt and black pepper. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish and top with muenster slices. Broil until golden brown.
